BLESSED DON ALVARO'S ALTAR
On Saturday, September 27, 2014, Don Alvaro del Portillo was beatified in Madrid, Spain. He was the successor of St. Josemaria Escriva, the founder of the Prelature of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei. Through a series of seemingly random circumstances, an altar upon which the new Blessed offered Holy Mass came into our possession. This altar (which is now a SECOND CLASS RELIC!) will be on display, along with a hand-painted portrait of Don Alvaro in the "Epiphany" chapel opposite our beautiful baptistery. In this area there is an exquisite copy in oil of The Adoration of the Magi painted by the Spanish artist, Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez. The original painting (1619) adorns a church in Madrid, the city where Don Alvaro was born. The portrait of Blessed Alvaro is not yet finished but as soon as it is, both the altar and the portrait will be unveiled. More information about Blessed Alvaro del Portillo can be found HERE. The photo to the left shows the altar, newly restored. The altar is yet unadorned with proper altar cloths and candlesticks but these will be added in due course along with a plaque identifying the altar.
